Top Tips for Removing and Preventing Mould

Mould in the bathroom, especially in and around your shower enclosure is not only unsightly but can also affect your health too, so it’s important to get rid of it as soon as it appears and keep it under control.

How to get rid of mould in your shower

There are a variety of mould cleaning sprays available to buy that will immediately kill mould, and you should always carefully read the manufacturer’s guidelines to ensure safe and effective use. To use the mould spray just simply spray the affected area in your bathroom, and leave for the required time, then simply clean afterwards.

An alternative way to get rid of the mould in the bathroom, especially the shower area is to use a mixture of bleach and water. First of all mix one part bleach and one part water, then apply this mixture to the area where there is mould, leave for 15 minutes then rinse the area with clean water. If required this can be repeated. Remember to always wear protective gloves when using bleach and make sure the area is well ventilated.

How to prevent mould in the bathroom

To prevent mould building up it’s important that you clean your shower enclosure and around your bathroom on a regular basis.

Ensure that your bathroom is sufficiently ventilated, either by keeping a window open during and after a bath or shower. If your bathroom doesn’t have a window install an extraction fan so the damp air is efficiently cleared away.

It’s recommended to maintain a humidity level of 40-60% in your bathroom and home. A dehumidifier can be used to reduce moisture levels in the air.

Any leaks in your bathroom should be fixed as soon as possible, this will prevent mould from growing.

If you’re painting your bathroom, adding a mould inhibitor to the paint before starting any painting work will help prevent mould from forming.

Only use non-porous flooring in your bathroom, and never fit carpet as this will be a breeding ground for mould and bacteria.
