Even though the bathroom is the smallest room in your home, the lighting still requires careful consideration and attention to detail. As with other rooms around your home, the bathroom needs a mixture of task, mood and feature lighting to help bring it to life, as well as to help create a sense of calm and relaxation.

With more of us using the bathroom as a place to escape from the stresses of modern life than ever before, it’s essential to think about the lighting when you’re designing and creating a new space. More often than not, bathroom lighting can get overlooked, but there are an impressive choice of lighting options available to perfectly enhance the look of any bathroom.

Bathroom lighting tips

When choosing new bathroom lighting, take into consideration just how much light the space gets. Here we share some useful bathroom lighting tips for you to think about…

  • Does your bathroom have a natural light source, and what existing lighting options exist?
  • Is there any task lighting to provide you with illumination when shaving or applying make-up.
  • Instead of having one light fitting, fit downlights instead for a sleek, modern look.
  • Fit a dimmer switch so you can create different lighting effects for the morning and evening.

Bathroom lighting options

Think about the different areas in your bathroom when planning the lighting; mirrors and cabinets with lights are great for task lighting, and are usually installed above the basin area.

Some mirrors feature demist pads and incorporate touch or motion sensors instead of untidy light pulls, while spotlights are ideal for all-over illumination and can be used in every area of the bathroom including over the bath and shower, providing they have the correct IP rating.

Bathroom feature lighting

The shower or bath area provides the perfect opportunity to install feature lighting. Why not fit downlights near to the back wall to create a dramatic shaft of light?

Shower heads with colour changing LED lights add a touch of designer style to any bathroom. The LED square and round shower heads available at CheapSuites.co.uk incorporate LED lights that cycle through a variety of relaxing colours, which are simply operated by the pressure of the water.

For added wow-factor why not opt for an LED basin tap such as the CheapSuites.co.uk

Bathroom lighting zones

There are strict regulations concerning the type of light you can use for the different areas in your bathroom, so it’s essential to choose fittings with the correct IP (Ingress Protection) rating according to where they are going to be installed within the bathroom. The IP rating is always followed by two numbers, which refer to the level of protection.

Zone 0 – inside the bath or shower – any lighting in this area must have a rating of a least IP67 and a maximum voltage of 12v.

Zone 1 – the area above the bath with a height of 2.25m from the floor – the lighting in this area must have a minimum rating of IP44.

Zone 2 – the area reaching to 0.6m outside the perimeter of the bath and to a height of 2.25m from the floor – a minimum rating of IP44 is required for this area.

Zone 3 – anywhere outside of zones 0, 1 and 2 and where there is no water – no IP rating is required.
